Years = Average time spent living in a refugee camp
Solo visits: Under the bridge
Refugee: “A person who ‘owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it.”
(The Dictionary of Law, Edited by Julian Webb, Penguin Reference Library )
Origin: Sudanese, Chadian and Eritrean
A story summary: One of the young Sudanese (29 years old) who I met, currently living under a bridge, said they were only allowed to board the boat in their shorts, he had carefully wrapped his ID and University certificate in his pocket. That is all he could bring with him. He had to leave the rest of his belongings on the shore. I asked him how I could help the most, assuming he would request clothes or food, he asked me for a book.
Mostly young men: in need of shoes, clothing and food.
Though on my last visit there were families living under the bridge too, with young children, and no facilities.
